Honouring History Through Design: Our VE Day 60th Anniversary Moment
Creating events that make an impact is at the heart of what we do, but every now and then, an event comes along that stays with us forever. Not just for how it looked, but for how it felt.
One of our proudest moments was working on the 60th anniversary celebration of VE day to honour the veterans, back in 2005.
Organised by the Greater London Authority, with the then-Mayor Ken Livingstone leading the way, the event was more than just a celebration - it was a powerful tribute. A chance to commemorate the end of World War II and honour the veterans who brought peace - we knew it had to come from the heart.
We transformed the tiered outdoor area at City Hall known as the Scoop into a sea of red, white, and blue. It was a setting designed not only to celebrate, but to make people stop, feel and remember.
Taking inspiration from the original VE day street parties, we recreated the celebrations inside City Hall London, transporting everyone back with bunting, buffets on long tables and a band.
We were proud and honoured to be chosen to work on this event.. It was our way of saying thank you and showing our respect for those who fought during this time and those who sadly didn’t come back.
The day itself was emotional. One of those moments where you’re proud of the work, proud of the team, and incredibly proud to help tell a story, honour a legacy, and create a moment that truly mattered with a way to say thank you.
From the first briefings and on site meetings, there were tears - and still today, even after all these years, it still makes Jacqui well up. It reminded us just how powerful events can be when they’re rooted in a part of our history.
We’ve worked on hell of a lot of events over the years, but for us, this one was unforgettable.
